Mould comes in many colours – black, blue, white, green and orange… and despite the pretty hues and patterns, mould is potentially your biggest threat to a healthy home.

The most common types of mould include aspergillus, cladosporium and stachybotrys atra (also known as black mould).

Aspergillus is a fairly allergenic mould that is commonly found on foods and in home air conditioning systems. Cladosporium is typically a black or green ‘pepper like’ substance that grows on the back of toilets, painted surfaces and fiberglass air ducts. While this mould is nontoxic to humans, it can trigger common allergy symptoms such as watery itchy eyes, rashes and a sore throat.

Orangey-red mould is typically found outdoors because it thrives best on decaying plants and moist wood. This mould is completely harmless -although very slimy – so probably best to remove quickly before someone takes a tumble!

White mould isn’t technically a species of mould but rather indicates that the mould is in the early stages of growth and can easily be treated and removed. Phew!
